I am always interested in seeing the evaluations the audience turns in after I speak. It is such a terrific way for me to stay connected, and, most importantly, to find ways to improve my message and delivery. It also helps me stay grounded, because you never know which words or stories will resonate with an audience member.
Case in point: recently, I spoke about overcoming obstacles for a group of leaders who were striving to take their businesses to the next level.
The message was straightforward, as I spoke to the three things that top achievers in business and in life all have in common:
- A clear forward vision
- A willingness to change
- A desire for continual learning
There were five questions on the evaluation for which the audience could give their feedback. However, the answer one leader gave to the question—“What was the key takeaway from Richard’s message that resonated with you?”—was shocking! The one-word answer by this leader, in all caps, was HOPE. No other question was answered—just this one!
This is a lesson for all of us. The words we say—in conversation, in presentations, in service with others—have an impact on people in ways we cannot even imagine. It reminded me that kindness, thoughtfulness, caring, and empathy should be the theme running through all our words.
Our Words Matter.
