Seriously – Is Patience Really a Virtue?

We live in a time where we have all grown accustomed to instant results.

Instant breakfasts, fast food faster, lightning chargers for our devices, same day delivery from local grocery stores and other retailers with one or two clicks.

As a result, we often approach business and life with the mindset – I want it now and I deserve it now and if I don’t get it now, I am frustrated and stressed.

Here we are at the end of the first quarter.

Are you behind or ahead of your goals for the year?

If you are behind, you can become impatient with yourself and spend needless energy beating yourself up for not having “done more.”

If you are ahead of your goals for the year, you still may be impatient.

I have seen this happen many times in our coaching activities. As an example, an advisory team we were coaching had a great quarter. Yet the lead advisor said, “we could do much more if my staff got things done faster as it takes too long to onboard a new client and if they spent less time talking first thing in the morning and more time working – so I need to push them.” All this without knowing the effort and time it takes to onboard a new client. And when I asked, he had no clear idea what the staff was conversing about. He just didn’t like the chatter.

Whether you are impatient with yourself for being behind on your goals, or with your staff for not responding fast enough according to you, there is no benefit gained from exasperation.

Far better you reset your mindset and focus on consistently executing actions and communications with yourself and others to deliver the results you want.

Is Patience a Virtue? By most accounts yes, and it is a business building, staff retaining and life fulfilling requirement.
