Are Gifts for Prospects Appropriate?

Question:

Mr. Weylman,
Would it be appropriate to bring a gift to a prospect, something small, to thank them for giving you the time to meet with them? The idea is to create reciprocity, making it easier for them to say yes. Do you have any good gift ideas that would be appropriate? Our team was thinking about leather bound calendars/day planners with our company logo on them. (about $12.00 each)

Answer:

The calendar/day planner would be fine in an office setting. Another idea could be a best selling book. For a gift idea at home, you may want to consider scented soaps or candles. The premise of gifts is not reciprocity. Gifts are meant to demonstrate graciousness and thoughtfulness. It should not be considered a “quid pro quo.” You should not give to get, you give to elevate the relationship.
